  • Weekly lessons, 8 weeks per term, 4 terms per year
  • One hour lessons comprised of class time and feedback to parents

The Ready to Read program focuses on the following
‘literacy predictors of success.’

Concepts about print:

Awareness of the functions, forms, conventions and uses of print and an understanding about words, letters, sentences, paragraphs, punctuation and grammar.

Phonological awareness:

Assisting children to develop the ability to break words into parts and recognise the smaller parts in words.

Letter knowledge and vocabulary:

Being able to recognise different letters in the alphabet; and having a good understanding of different words.

Phonics:

The relationships between letters and sounds.

Blending sounds:

Helping children develop the essential skill of ‘blending’ different sounds together.

Comprehension:

Identifying familiar words quickly and automatically and understanding their meaning.

Handwriting skills:

Pencil grip and handwriting script used in schools.

By the end of the program, many children can:

  • Recognise sounds, letters and words
  • Spell and begin writing letters and symbols
  • Understand rhythm and rhyme in language
  • Demonstrate an increased vocabulary and comprehension
  • Understand how to use words to communicate effectively

During the program, we also see children develop:

  • Interpersonal skills and confidence to learn in small groups
  • Listening skills
  • The ability to participate appropriately in class activities
  • Improved critical thinking skills

“Above expectations, put simply it's not just about learning to read. My daughter is attempting to sound words she has not come across, the fundamentals are taught in reading (phonics), writing and spelling. Different techniques are used to achieve this. The class size is optimal with qualified teachers and materials provided to practice at home. Most importantly for me, my daughter has developed her interpersonal skills and the ability to participate in class activities - working on her listening skills, taking turns and becoming familiar with classroom dynamics.”

Preparatory Reading Program

Preparatory
Program Overview:

  • Sequential program designed specifically for 3-year-olds
  • Small class sizes of up to 5 children

  • Half hour lessons comprised of class time and feedback to parents

Our preparatory program is a fun, interactive way to prepare your child for literacy. In these play-based modules, we focus on teaching children to make the sounds of letters and build their vocabulary skills. Children develop early literacy concepts and build on their fine and gross motor skills whilst fostering a love of reading.

This program leads well into the Ready to Read program, which is suitable for children from four years of age. Our preparatory program is delivered by the same qualified, knowledgeable and dedicated teachers as the Ready to Read program.

“I couldn’t be happier about the head start that Ready to Read gave my daughter; I would recommend it to absolutely every pre-schooler.”

Stephanie

“It's really nice to see Penny’s progress each week with the take-home activities. It's become something we both look forward to each week!”

Vivienne

“Ready to Read gave my boys confidence to excel in their first year at school. They knew all of their sounds, how to blend sounds together and they were able to read simple sentences by the time they started kindergarten.”
